1965 Chevrolet El Camino L79

Introduced for 1964, the Chevrolet El Camino returned on Chevrolet's new intermediate Chevelle platform, with revised styling and increasingly serious small-block performance available for 1965, including the high-performance L79 327. This 1965 Chevrolet El Camino was discovered as a barn find in 2007 and subsequently underwent a frame-off restoration completed around 2012. It is powered by its numbers-matching 327ci V8 and is believed to be one of very few El Caminos listed in the L79 Registry. The body has been restored to its original Cypress Green, with the body-off restoration involving extensive disassembly and stripping the body to bare metal before refinishing. Restoration photos show the El Camino reduced to a bare shell, revealing notably straight bodywork prior to paint. The deep green finish extends throughout the cargo bed, including the ribbed steel floor, inner bedsides, wheelhouses and inside of the tailgate. Chrome bumpers, bright exterior trim and factory-style Chevrolet and El Camino badging preserve the original appearance. Body-color 15" steel wheels with Chevrolet hubcaps complete the period look and are wrapped in BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires with redline striping. Under the hood is the numbers-matching 327ci Chevrolet V8, finished in traditional Chevrolet Orange and equipped with a correct Holley 4-barrel carburetor, an aluminum intake manifold, period valve covers and a dual-snorkel air cleaner. Power is routed through a floor-shifted Muncie 4-speed manual transmission to a 12-bolt rear axle with 3.31 gearing and Positraction, with the axle assembly closely preceding the car's April build date. The chassis uses factory suspension with coil springs and a front anti-sway bar with factory-style power steering. A dual exhaust system with separate mufflers completes the mechanical package. Inside, the El Camino is finished in its correct Light Fawn Pattern Imitation Leather with a standard bench seat. Matching door panels, dashboard, steering wheel and surrounding trim maintain the period presentation, while the floor-mounted 4-speed shifter reflects the performance-oriented drivetrain. Factory-style instrumentation is supplemented by an AutoMeter tachometer mounted to the steering column and Summit auxiliary oil-pressure and water-temperature gauges beneath the dash. A Custom Autosound head unit with Bluetooth capability occupies the factory radio location, while a CD player operates through its auxiliary input and kick-panel speakers provide the audio. Its numbers-matching L79 power, correct period presentation and inclusion in the L79 Registry distinguish this 1965 El Camino from the more commonly encountered examples of later years. Restored in its original Cypress Green over Light Fawn, it represents a particularly compelling example of Chevrolet's early performance-oriented El Camino.
