Chevrolet El Camino
Half car, half truck β with SS454 power, all muscle.
The El Camino occupied a unique niche as a coupe utility β car-like to drive, truck-useful in back. From 1964 onward it shared the Chevelle's A-body platform, which meant access to the full Chevrolet engine lineup including the SS396 and the legendary SS454. The 1970 SS454 LS6 El Camino is one of the most sought-after coupe utilities ever built.
History
The El Camino launched in 1959 on the full-size Chevrolet platform, directly inspired by the Australian ute body style. It was discontinued after 1960, then revived in 1964 on the new A-body Chevelle chassis β a much better fit for the concept. The performance potential became obvious: the same SS packages available on the Chevelle, including the 396 and later the 454, could be ordered.
The 1970 model year brought the SS454 with LS5 and LS6 options β the same powertrains offered in the Chevelle SS. An LS6 El Camino was arguably the most practical muscle car ever built: 450 hp and room for a full sheet of plywood in the bed. Production of all SS454 El Caminos was small, making them rare and increasingly collectible.
Notable Versions
SS396 (1968β69)
Super Sport package with 396 big-block, 325β375 hp. The performance sweet spot of the A-body era.
SS454 LS6 (1970)
450 hp in a car with a usable cargo bed. Among the fastest and most practical muscle cars ever sold.
SS (1971β87)
SS package continued but with declining power. Later cars make affordable drivers with strong aftermarket support.
What to Look for When Buying
Key inspection points from experienced collectors.
Bed rust is a unique concern
Unlike Chevelles, the El Camino's cargo bed takes abuse. Inspect the bed floor, tailgate, and bed-to-cab junction for rust and damage.
Chevelle parts interchange freely
The El Camino shares virtually all mechanical and body parts with the Chevelle through the firewall. Parts availability is excellent.
Verify SS and LS6 authenticity
Use the partial VIN stamp and broadcast sheet. LS6 cars carry a premium similar to the Chevelle counterpart.
