Land Rover Series I/II/III
The utilitarian original that proved a go-anywhere vehicle didn't need to be complicated.
Introduced in 1948 as a simple farm and utility vehicle influenced partly by the wartime Willys Jeep, the Series Land Rover evolved gradually over three generations while retaining its basic aluminum-bodied, ladder-frame formula — simplicity that made it genuinely repairable anywhere in the world.
History
The Series I (1948–1958) offered the simplest mechanicals and smallest engines of the range, built in multiple wheelbase lengths for different roles from farm work to military use.
The Series II (1958–1971) brought a slightly wider, more rounded body and revised engines, improving comfort marginally without compromising the original's ruggedness.
The Series III (1971–1985) modernized with an all-synchromesh gearbox and a plastic grille, and remains the most common and usable classic Series today thanks to better parts availability.

The separate steel chassis rusts even though the aluminum body largely doesn't — inspect the chassis independently of the body condition.

Engine and gearbox swaps are common across decades of working use.
Diesel engines are generally more desirable
Better reliability and parts support than the smaller petrol engines in most markets.
Inspect wood floor and door frames on earlier examples
Rot here is common on Series I/II trucks that saw genuine farm or off-road use.
