Land Rover Range Rover (Classic)
The original luxury SUV, engineered to be as capable off-road as it was comfortable on it.
Launched in 1970, the Range Rover created an entirely new vehicle category by pairing genuine off-road capability with car-like ride comfort — and, eventually, genuine luxury appointments that the earliest utilitarian-trimmed examples never had.
History
Early two-door models (1970–1981) were surprisingly spartan in trim despite their sophisticated coil-spring suspension and comfort-focused engineering — Land Rover initially saw the Range Rover as a rugged estate car, not a luxury vehicle.
A four-door body arrived in 1981, and progressively more luxurious trim levels followed through the 1980s and 90s as the model matured into the true luxury SUV it's remembered as today.
Fuel injection and automatic transmission options arrived later in production, broadening the Range Rover's appeal well beyond its original off-road-focused audience.

What to Look for When Buying
Key inspection points from experienced collectors.
Inspect the steel chassis for rust
Critical even though most body panels are aluminum — chassis rust is the real structural risk.
Verify air suspension function on later models
Repairs can be expensive if the system has been neglected.
Check automatic transmission service history
A well-documented service history is worth paying for given repair costs.
Expect some electrical quirks on later, more complex examples
Not unusual for the era, but worth budgeting for.
Verify the V8 hasn't suffered overheating damage
Head gasket issues are a known and common concern — check coolant condition and history.
