1983–2016Collector's Guide

Land Rover Defender

The direct descendant of the original Land Rover, refined but never softened.

Introduced in 1983 as the One Ten and 1984 as the Ninety (named for their wheelbase in inches), the range adopted the "Defender" name in 1990 to distinguish it from the new Discovery. It carried the Series III's basic formula into the modern era with coil-spring suspension and permanent four-wheel drive.

History

The original One Ten and Ninety updated the Series III platform with coil springs and a permanent 4WD system, improving on-road manners without sacrificing off-road capability.

Renamed Defender 90/110/130 in 1990, the range received steady mechanical updates β€” most notably a succession of diesel engines β€” while the basic body and chassis remained recognizably unchanged.

Production of the original body style continued until January 2016, making it one of the longest-running vehicle designs in automotive history before Land Rover replaced it with an all-new model.

Notable Versions

Defender 90

The shortest and most nimble wheelbase, popular for its agility.

NAS Defender (1993–97)

US-spec models sold in limited numbers, now highly sought after by American collectors.

Td5

The last major diesel engine generation (1998–2006), valued for reliability and refinement.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

Chassis rust remains the primary structural concern

Just as with earlier Series trucks β€” inspect the separate chassis thoroughly regardless of body condition.

Verify NAS authenticity carefully

US-spec Defenders command a real premium and are frequently misrepresented β€” confirm via VIN and documentation.

Diesel engines, especially Td5, are more desirable

Better reliability and stronger parts support than earlier engines.

Check for aftermarket off-road modifications

Common on used examples β€” decide whether you want a modified truck or a stock one before shopping.

Confirm galvanized vs. painted chassis

Later production used galvanized chassis with better long-term rust resistance β€” worth knowing which you're buying.
