Designed by Howard "Dutch" Darrin against Kaiser management's initial wishes and built in tiny numbers during Kaiser's final year of serious US passenger car production, the Darrin paired a genuinely innovative fiberglass body with unique doors that slid forward into the front fenders rather than swinging open. Its rarity, distinctive engineering, and status as one of the first fiberglass-bodied production cars in America — alongside the Chevrolet Corvette, introduced the same year — make it one of the most sought-after independent-era American sports cars today.
History
Dutch Darrin developed the car largely on his own initiative, believing Kaiser needed a genuine sports car to compete with the newly introduced Chevrolet Corvette — Kaiser executives were initially reluctant, but ultimately approved limited production for 1954.
The sliding-door design was a genuine engineering solution to a styling goal: Darrin wanted a low beltline without conventional doors interrupting the car's clean lines, and doors that slid into the fenders rather than swinging open achieved that while remaining functional.
Only 435 were built before Kaiser ended US passenger car production, making the Darrin rarer than the contemporary Corvette by a wide margin and a genuine curiosity of the early American fiberglass sports car era.
