Designed by Howard "Dutch" Darrin against Kaiser management's initial wishes and built in tiny numbers during Kaiser's final year of serious US passenger car production, the Darrin paired a genuinely innovative fiberglass body with unique doors that slid forward into the front fenders rather than swinging open. Its rarity, distinctive engineering, and status as one of the first fiberglass-bodied production cars in America — alongside the Chevrolet Corvette, introduced the same year — make it one of the most sought-after independent-era American sports cars today.

Facing dwindling resources and no V8 engine of its own late in Kaiser-Frazer's run as an independent automaker, Kaiser turned to a supercharged Continental-sourced six to keep the Manhattan competitive against V8-powered rivals from Detroit's bigger manufacturers. The result was a genuinely capable, distinctively styled sedan that represented the last serious flagship effort from an independent automaker before Kaiser exited passenger car production in the US.
