Built for a single model year in genuinely small numbers, the Syclone took GMC's ordinary S-15 compact pickup and transformed it with a turbocharged, intercooled V6 and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system borrowed from GM's performance car programs — producing a genuinely shocking amount of straight-line performance from a vehicle that looked, at a glance, like an unremarkable small truck. Period road tests recording it beating contemporary exotics to 60 mph made it an instant cult classic.
History
GMC engineers started with the compact S-15 pickup platform and fitted a turbocharged, intercooled 4.3-liter V6 producing 280 hp — a genuinely enormous figure for a small truck of the era — paired with a full-time all-wheel-drive system for real traction off the line.
Road tests at the time recorded 0-60 times in the mid-4-second range, figures that beat many contemporary sports cars and exotics — a genuinely startling result from what looked like an ordinary work truck, and the source of the model's lasting cult reputation.
Built for just the 1991 model year (a small number of related Typhoon SUVs followed for 1991–92), the Syclone's limited production and unique performance-truck concept have made surviving examples increasingly collectible as their cultural significance has become better recognized.
