Sharing its platform and mechanicals with the contemporary Chevrolet Suburban but distinguished by GMC-specific trim, grille, and engine options, the 1967–72 "Action Line" generation represented the SUV's formative years — before "sport utility" was even a recognized category — as a genuinely practical three-door wagon built on a truck chassis. GMC's traditional positioning as the more upscale, better-equipped counterpart to Chevrolet trucks gives this generation a slightly different collector identity than its more common Chevy sibling.

Built for a single model year in genuinely small numbers, the Syclone took GMC's ordinary S-15 compact pickup and transformed it with a turbocharged, intercooled V6 and a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system borrowed from GM's performance car programs — producing a genuinely shocking amount of straight-line performance from a vehicle that looked, at a glance, like an unremarkable small truck. Period road tests recording it beating contemporary exotics to 60 mph made it an instant cult classic.
