Sitting above the entry-level Firedome in DeSoto's lineup, the Fireflite offered buyers most of the style and performance of a Chrysler at a more accessible price — a positioning strategy typical of the mid-1950s American market, where each manufacturer offered several closely related brands at different price points. Dramatic yearly styling changes through the decade, culminating in extravagant 1957–59 tailfins, make the Fireflite a genuine period piece of American automotive design.
History
Introduced for 1955 as DeSoto's top series, the Fireflite used a 291 Hemi V8 and DeSoto's first modern wraparound windshield, part of a broader Chrysler-wide styling refresh for the year.
The 1957 redesign, part of Chrysler's "Forward Look" styling program under Virgil Exner, gave the Fireflite dramatic tailfins and a lower, longer silhouette — widely regarded as one of the most striking American car designs of the era.
Production continued through 1960, though DeSoto's overall sales declined sharply through the late 1950s as Chrysler Corporation's brand lineup became increasingly redundant — a decline that led directly to the marque's 1961 discontinuation.
