The Wildcat was Buick's full-size performance model, carrying the 401 and 425 Nailhead V8 in its most sporting body style. Overshadowed by the mid-size muscle car era, the Wildcat convertible with the 425 Nailhead is one of the most underappreciated performance cars of the 1960s — fast, stylish, and considerably cheaper than comparable muscle cars.
History
Buick introduced the Wildcat in 1962 as a sporting variation on the full-size Invicta. The 401 'Nailhead' V8 — named for its small vertical valves — was unique in character and capable in performance. The 1963–64 full-size Wildcats with the 425 Nailhead are the most powerful, capable of 0–60 in under 8 seconds in a full-size convertible body.
The 1965–70 Wildcat remained on the full-size B-body platform with updated 430 and 455 V8 engines replacing the Nailhead after 1966. The convertibles from all years are the most sought-after; the 1965–66 cars with the last of the Nailhead engines occupy a unique collector space. After 1970, the Wildcat name was retired.
