The Riviera was GM's personal luxury coupe and one of the most sophisticated American design achievements of the 20th century. The 1963–65 first-generation cars, designed by Bill Mitchell's team without a single chrome fender ornament, are widely considered among the most beautiful American cars ever built. History
Bill Mitchell's team created the Riviera as a restrained, European-influenced personal luxury car — a deliberate departure from Detroit's chrome excess. The 1963 debut received universal critical acclaim; Road & Track called it one of the most beautiful cars ever produced. Despite its elegance, the Riviera packed Buick's powerful Nailhead V8 in all configurations.
The 'Boat-Tail' Riviera of 1971–73 polarized opinion with its tapered rear and arched backlight. Critics dismissed it; enthusiasts celebrated its boldness. Today those cars are recognized as one of GM's most adventurous designs and are increasingly sought by collectors who ignored them for decades.

Nailhead engine service is specialized
The 401/425 Nailhead engines are robust but different in service from later Buick V8s. Find a shop with specific experience.
