Buick GSX
Buick's boldest muscle car — Saturn Yellow, Apollo White, and tire-shredding Stage 1 power.
The GSX was the ultimate expression of Buick's Gran Sport performance line. Available in striking Saturn Yellow or Apollo White with bold stripes, spoilers, and the legendary Stage 1 455 V8, the GSX was one of the fastest production cars of 1970 — capable of running the quarter mile in the 13s from the factory. Its combination of Buick luxury with genuine supercar performance makes it one of the most desirable GM muscle cars.
History
Buick created the GSX as a high-visibility performance statement to compete with the Chevelle SS and Pontiac GTO Judge. The Stage 1 455 engine — producing 360 hp and a massive 510 lb-ft of torque — gave the GSX performance that eclipsed nearly everything else on the street. Only 678 GSX models were built in 1970 (488 with Stage 1), making them among the rarest of all GM A-body muscle cars. Production continued in 1971 and 1972 with lower numbers and diminishing power due to emissions detuning.
Notable Versions
Stage 1 GSX (1970)
455 with 360 hp and 510 lb-ft torque. The most powerful and most valuable GSX — 488 built.
Saturn Yellow
The most recognizable GSX color. Standard GSX colors were Saturn Yellow and Apollo White only.
What to Look for When Buying
Key inspection points from experienced collectors.
GSX documentation is essential
The GSX registry and broadcast sheet are the primary authentication tools. Stage 1 cars are frequently faked by adding stripes and badging.
Stage 1 engine must be numbers-matching
The Stage 1 engine stamp is on the block. A mismatched or missing stamp eliminates the Stage 1 premium entirely.
A-body rust patterns apply
Standard GM A-body rust areas: lower quarters, trunk floor, floor pans. Reproduction parts are available.
Production was tiny
Only 678 total GSX units in 1970 — fewer than many exotic European cars. Treat any purchase with corresponding scrutiny.
