Volkswagen GTI (Mk1/Mk2)
The car that invented the hot hatch and made front-wheel-drive performance respectable.
Volkswagen engineers built the original GTI largely as an internal side project, fitting a fuel-injected engine and sport-tuned suspension into the humble Golf hatchback — and in doing so created an entirely new performance car category almost by accident.
History
The Mk1 GTI (1976 in Europe, 1983 in the US) paired a fuel-injected engine with a close-ratio gearbox and stiffened suspension in a lightweight package, prized today for its raw, direct feel.
The Mk2 GTI (1985–1992) grew larger and more refined, eventually offering a 16-valve engine option with significantly more power — trading some of the Mk1's rawness for everyday usability and improved safety.

What to Look for When Buying
Key inspection points from experienced collectors.
Rust in floor pans, rear wheel arches, and battery tray is common
Inspect thoroughly on both Mk1 and Mk2 cars.
Verify the engine hasn't been swapped for a later, more powerful VW unit
Common among enthusiasts — matters if originality is your goal.
Check timing belt service history
These are interference engines — a snapped belt causes serious internal damage.
Mk1 GTIs are frequently modified
Finding one close to original specification takes patience if that's what you want.
Inspect for accident damage
The GTI's popularity with enthusiast drivers who push them hard means many examples have seen harder use than their mileage suggests.
