Volkswagen Beetle

The people's car that became the best-selling single car model in automotive history.

Ferdinand Porsche's original "people's car" design became a global phenomenon, prized for its simplicity, reliability, and irrepressible character across four decades of largely unchanged core engineering — the rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four never really went away.

History

Pre-war development gave way to postwar mass production under British Army oversight, and the Beetle became Volkswagen's flagship export, especially popular in the US through the 1960s and 70s counterculture era.

Engine displacement grew gradually from 1.1 liters to 1.6 liters over the decades while the fundamental air-cooled, rear-engine layout remained a constant — a rare example of a design succeeding almost unchanged for so long.

US sales ended in 1979, though production continued for other markets (notably Mexico) for decades afterward, cementing the Beetle's status as the best-selling single car design in history.

Notable Versions

Split-Window (1938–1953)

Pre-1953 divided rear window design. Rare and valuable, especially in original condition.

Oval-Window (1953–1957)

Single oval rear window, a transitional and collectible early postwar design.

Super Beetle (1971–1979)

Added front strut suspension and a curved windshield for improved ride and visibility.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

Rust is extremely common

Floor pans, heater channels, and the battery tray rust extensively — probe thoroughly before buying any Beetle.

Verify the engine number matches the chassis

Engines were commonly swapped and rebuilt over decades of ownership — confirm what you're actually getting.

Check for prior use as a dune buggy or Baja donor

Historically common and reduces originality — inspect for evidence of a modified past.

Split and oval-window cars are heavily faked

Given the premium these command, verify authenticity carefully before paying top dollar.

Inspect running boards and fender edges for rust-through

Common failure points on unrestored examples.
