Pontiac LeMans
The GTO's less famous sibling — identical body, fraction of the price.
The LeMans was the mid-range A-body Pontiac that shared its body with the GTO. In 1964–67, the GTO was technically an option package on the LeMans — meaning the body cars are identical. The LeMans name continued as its own model through 1977, offering V8 performance at below-GTO prices. The 1970 LeMans Sport Coupe with the 400 HO is an undervalued muscle car.
History
The LeMans began as the top trim of the Tempest compact in 1962. When the GTO launched in 1964 as a LeMans option package, the LeMans effectively became the non-performance GTO. Buyers who couldn't afford the GTO option or couldn't get insurance on it could order a LeMans with a 326 or 389 V8 and have nearly the same car for less money.
After the GTO became its own separate model in 1966, the LeMans continued on the same A-body platform with all the same mechanical options through the 400 V8. The T-37 sub-model (1971–72) was a stripped performance car in the Nova and Duster tradition — minimal trim, strong engine. The 1973–77 colonnade LeMans is a comfortable but unremarkable mid-size.

A-body parts interchange with GTO
The LeMans and GTO share virtually all mechanical and body components. Parts availability is excellent.
400 V8 cars offer genuine performance
A 400 HO LeMans runs closely with base GTOs at a significant price discount. An excellent driver-focused buy.
Avoid GTO misrepresentation
Some LeMans cars have been badged as GTOs. Verify via the broadcast sheet and PHS documentation before paying GTO prices.
