Pontiac GTO
The original muscle car — John DeLorean put a 389 in a mid-size and changed everything.
The GTO is credited as the original muscle car. Conceived by John DeLorean's team as a $296 option package on the 1964 Tempest LeMans, it sold 32,450 units against GM management's projections of 5,000 — proving the formula and igniting every other manufacturer to follow. The 1966–67 design and the 1969 Judge with Ram Air engines are the most collectible examples.
History
DeLorean's team packaged the 389 V8 with Tri-Power (three two-barrel carbs), dual exhausts, and stiffer suspension into the Tempest and called it the GTO — after Ferrari's racing car. GM management tried to kill it; they failed. By 1966 it had its own model designation and one of the most handsome bodies in American automotive history.
The 1968–69 'Endura' nose GTO was revolutionary — the first American car with a body-colored urethane bumper that absorbed minor impacts and returned to shape. The Judge option package (1969–71) added vibrant colors, spoilers, and the Ram Air III and IV engines. The Ram Air IV, with its round-port heads and aggressive cam, is widely considered the finest Pontiac street engine ever built.

A-body rust patterns apply
Lower quarters, trunk floor, and rockers — standard GM A-body areas. All are well-understood and reproducible.
Use PHS documentation for 1964–65 cars
The 1964–65 GTO was an option on the Tempest, not a separate model. The Pontiac Historical Society (PHS) can provide factory documentation.
Ram Air IV cars are rare and valuable
Authenticity requires complete documentation. The Ram Air IV is frequently faked by swapping engines.
The Judge graphics were often removed
Some original Judges had their decals removed by embarrassed owners. Verify all Judge trim was factory-original.
