Pontiac GT-37

Budget Pontiac muscle β€” the GTO's little brother at a fraction of the price.

The Pontiac GT-37 was a budget performance package on the Tempest/LeMans platform designed to undercut the GTO's price while delivering genuine V8 muscle car performance. With the 350 or 400 V8 in a stripped-down body with a Hurst shifter and performance suspension, the GT-37 offered more performance per dollar than any other Pontiac of the era. It is one of the least-known and most undervalued GM muscle cars.

History

Pontiac created the T-37 in 1970 as a value-oriented performance model on the LeMans body. The GT-37 was the sport-suspension, Hurst-shifted upgrade package on the T-37, positioned as an entry-level GTO alternative. The 350 HO was the standard engine; the 400 was optional and brought performance comparable to the base GTO at significantly lower cost. With the Judge commanding a premium and insurance costs climbing, the GT-37 appealed to buyers who wanted performance without the badge tax.

Notable Versions

400 GT-37

The 400 V8 option brought GTO-level performance at LeMans pricing.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

Extremely undervalued

GT-37s are priced far below equivalent GTOs with similar powertrains. One of the best performance values in the A-body GM market.

Verify the GT-37 package

The GT-37 was a specific package on the T-37 body. Verify via the trim tag and broadcast sheet β€” plain T-37s and LeMans are more common.

A-body parts interchange with GTO

The GT-37 shares the A-body platform with the GTO, Chevelle, and 4-4-2. Parts availability is excellent.
