The Pontiac Grand Am arrived just as the muscle car era was ending, attempting to combine performance-oriented handling with personal luxury coupe styling. Its radial-tuned suspension, padded Endura nose, and available 455 V8 made it the sportiest full-size GM car of the mid-1970s. While never a muscle car by the classic definition, it carried Pontiac's performance heritage into an era when outright power was no longer possible.
History
Pontiac engineers designed the Grand Am as a 'European-style' performance luxury car — tighter handling than any other full-size American car, a padded Endura nose, and a uniquely supportive interior with contoured seats. The 400 V8 was standard; the 455 optional. Despite critical praise for its handling, sales were modest: buyers who wanted luxury chose the Grand Prix, and buyers who wanted performance had fewer options than before. The Grand Am was discontinued after 1975 and briefly revived in 1978.
