Plymouth GTX
The Road Runner's upscale twin — premium muscle with standard 440 Magnum power.
The GTX was Plymouth's gentleman's muscle car — the same B-body platform as the Road Runner, but trimmed in chrome, bucket seats, and the 440 Magnum V8 as standard equipment rather than an option. The 440 was rated at 375 hp; with the 426 HEMI option, the GTX became one of the fastest factory cars money could buy. Rarer than the Road Runner, it occupies a premium collector position.
History
Plymouth introduced the GTX in 1967 as a response to the Pontiac GTO — a premium muscle car with serious performance and upscale appointments. The 440 Super Commando V8 was standard, a significant departure from competitors who charged extra for big-blocks. The 426 HEMI was a brutal additional option. Both engine choices could run 13-second quarter miles in factory-stock form.
After the Road Runner arrived in 1968 with its stripped approach, the GTX shared its B-body platform but kept its luxury mission. The 1970 GTX is widely considered the best-looking of the series, and 1971 marked the last year before the HEMI was discontinued. GTX production was always smaller than the Road Runner, making well-documented examples increasingly sought.

440+6 GTX (1969–71)
440 Six-Pack with three 2-barrel carbs, 390 hp. Nearly HEMI performance at a fraction of the premium.

Final year of the B-body convertible. Among the most desirable Plymouth configurations.

B-body rust is everywhere
Trunk floor, lower quarters, floor pans, and the lower A-pillars all rust. Budget for multiple areas on any project GTX.
HEMI verification is essential
HEMI GTXs command 4–5× the value of 440 examples. The fender tag and broadcast sheet are the only reliable verification tools.
GTX is rarer than Road Runner
Lower production numbers than the Road Runner mean clean documented GTXs are harder to find. Condition matters more here.
