Plymouth Duster
The lightweight A-body fastback β one of the best drag cars ever sold at a base price.
The Duster was Plymouth's fastback compact on the A-body platform, and the 340 V8 version is one of the most effective performance-per-dollar propositions of the muscle car era. Light, simple, and powered by Chrysler's best small-block, the 340 Duster regularly embarrassed far more expensive cars at the drag strip and on the street.
History
Plymouth designed the Duster to replace the Valiant coupe with a sportier fastback body. The 340 V8 package launched simultaneously with the car in 1970, offering 275 hp in a body weighing barely 3,100 lbs. The result was 14-second quarter mile times from a car that cost considerably less than equivalent muscle cars from GM and Ford. The Twister package added appearance trim, while the base 340 focused on substance over style.
Emissions regulations progressively reduced the 340's output; it was replaced by the 360 in 1974 with less horsepower. The Duster Gold Duster and Feather Duster economy trims represent a different era entirely. The 1970β72 340 Dusters are the performance collector cars; later models fade from the collector radar.
Notable Versions
340 Duster (1970β72)
275 hp in a 3,100-lb car. Runs 14s in stock trim; easily modified into the 13s.
Twister Package
Appearance package with hockey-stick stripes and a hood-mounted tachometer. The style-focused 340 Duster.
Duster 360 (1974β76)
The 340 replacement with reduced power due to emissions. Less desirable but still a capable performance car.
What to Look for When Buying
Key inspection points from experienced collectors.
Rockers and floors rust predictably
A-body rocker panels and floor pans are the primary rust areas. Expect repairs on any project car.
The 340 is one of Chrysler's best engines
Strong aftermarket support, excellent parts availability, and a willing character make the 340 a joy to own and maintain.
Verify 340 vs 318 before purchase
318-equipped Dusters are common; 340 cars are the performance version. The block casting number and partial VIN stamp confirm the engine.
