Introduced as Packard's answer to the Cadillac Eldorado and Buick Skylark, the Caribbean was a limited-production, richly equipped convertible (and later hardtop) built to showcase Packard's continued engineering and styling credentials during a period of intensifying competition from GM's luxury brands. It remains the most collectible postwar Packard, representing the marque's last serious flagship effort before its 1958 discontinuation.

Sitting at the top of Packard's mainstream sedan lineup, the Patrician offered buyers the marque's most complete expression of traditional American luxury — a smooth straight-eight (later V8), refined ride, and the understated formality Packard had built its reputation on since the early 1900s. It represents Packard's core business through the company's final years as a truly independent manufacturer, distinct from the flashier, lower-volume Caribbean.
