Oldsmobile Toronado
America's first front-wheel-drive car since 1937 — and one of its most dramatic designs.
The Toronado was an engineering milestone — the first American front-wheel-drive production car in nearly three decades — and a design masterpiece. The 385 hp 425 V8 drove the front wheels through a split-case transmission, producing a car that handled unlike anything else on American roads. The 1966–67 first-generation design, with its covered rear wheels and fastback roofline, is considered one of Bill Mitchell's finest GM works.
History
Chief stylist Bill Mitchell's team created the Toronado as a showcase for GM's front-wheel-drive engineering. The 1966 debut astounded the automotive press — despite its FWD layout, the Toronado was quick (0–60 in 8.5 seconds) and handled with surprising balance. The 385 hp 425 V8 and the Unitized Power Package (transmission alongside engine, not behind it) were engineering firsts.
The 1968–70 updates were mild; the 1971 redesign produced a longer, more formal car with the 455 V8. The 1971–78 Toronado is a comfortable and capable personal luxury car but lacks the drama of the original. The 1966–67 cars are the collector-grade examples; the covered rear wheel openings and fastback roofline have never been matched.
