The Oldsmobile Cutlass W-31 was a factory performance package centered on a specially tuned 350 cubic inch V8 with performance heads, a hot camshaft, and a cold-air induction system. In a lighter Cutlass S body, the W-31 delivered quarter-mile times comparable to much larger-engined cars of the era. It was offered only in 1969 and 1970 and is one of the least-known genuine factory performance packages from the muscle car era.
History
Oldsmobile engineering developed the W-31 as a small-block high-performance option for buyers who wanted 4-4-2 performance without a 4-4-2's insurance rates. The 350 engine was fitted with W-30-style components: special cylinder heads, a performance camshaft, functional cold-air induction through twin underbumper scoops, and a high-flow exhaust. The result was 325 hp that felt stronger than the rating — insurance companies rated it lower than the 4-4-2's 400 V8, making it a clever way to get performance at lower ownership cost.
