The 1949 Oldsmobile 88 is one of the most historically significant American performance cars ever built — the prototype muscle car formula of a powerful engine in a lighter mid-size body. The 303 cubic inch overhead-valve 'Rocket' V8, installed in the lighter 76 series body instead of the heavier 98, produced a car that dominated the first season of NASCAR's Strictly Stock division and inspired every muscle car that followed.
History
In 1949, Oldsmobile engineer Gilbert Burrell's new overhead-valve V8 — the 'Rocket' — produced 135 hp from 303 cubic inches in an era when most American V8s were inefficient side-valve designs. Installed in the lighter, shorter 76 series body rather than the larger 98, the result was the fastest American car of its day. The 88 won 8 of the first 10 NASCAR Strictly Stock races in 1949. Lee Petty, Red Byron, and Curtis Turner drove them to victory.
The 88 remained Oldsmobile's performance star through the 1950s. The 1951–53 cars continued the NASCAR dominance. By the mid-1950s, the 88 had grown heavier and the Super 88 and 98 received the big V8 options. The Fiesta wagon (1953, only 458 built) and the holiday hardtop variants are particularly collectible. The 88 continued as a model designation through the 1980s but the performance era ends in the early 1960s.
