Mercury Montego
Mercury's mid-size muscle — the Torino's better-looking twin.
The Mercury Montego was the Mercury Division's mid-size car, sharing its platform with the Ford Torino but wearing unique Mercury styling. Available with the same engine lineup as the Torino — including the 428 Cobra Jet and 429 Super Cobra Jet — the Montego MX Brougham and Cyclone-trim variants delivered genuine performance. The 1972 Montego is particularly well-regarded for its clean styling.
History
Mercury introduced the Montego as a replacement for the Comet in the mid-size segment for 1968, built on the Ford Torino platform. The MX and MX Brougham trims offered luxury, while the Cyclone (see separate entry) provided the performance halo. The 428 CJ engine was available through 1971, making the Montego a legitimate muscle car despite its luxury orientation. The 1972–76 Montego adopted the large, formal roofline styling that was fashionable for the era and sacrificed performance credentials for comfort.
