The Mercury Cyclone Spoiler and Spoiler II were built for one purpose: to homologate an aerodynamic nose for NASCAR superspeedway racing. The Spoiler II's extended front end and unique trim gave it a slippery coefficient of drag that translated directly to higher top speeds on tracks like Daytona and Talladega. Only 519 Spoiler IIs were produced — making them among the rarest factory Ford-family performance cars.
History
NASCAR's homologation rules required manufacturers to produce a minimum number of street-legal versions of any body modification used in competition. Mercury needed to homologate the Cyclone's extended aerodynamic nose for the 1969 season, so 519 Spoiler IIs were built for street sale. Two editions commemorated NASCAR drivers: the Dan Gurney Special (blue and white) and the Cale Yarborough Special (red and white). Both used the 351 Windsor as the standard engine, with the 428 CJ available as an option.

Authentication is critical — only 519 built
The unique extended nose, VIN, and trim codes must all be verified. Standard Cyclone Spoilers (without the extended nose) are far more common.
Body parts for the unique nose are scarce
The extended front-end sheetmetal is unique to the Spoiler II and difficult to source. Buy only rust-free or fully restored examples.
