Mercury Cyclone
The Torino's Mercury twin — the Cyclone Spoiler is one of NASCAR's rarest homologation cars.
The Cyclone was Mercury's mid-size performance car on the Fairlane/Torino platform, offering the same powerful engines in a slightly different wrapper. The 1969 Cyclone Spoiler — built for NASCAR aerodynamic homologation — was produced in the same vein as the Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbird, with a special nose and roofline to improve superspeedway performance.
History
The Cyclone began as a performance trim of the Comet in 1964, offering bucket seats and a 289 V8. The 1966–67 Cyclone GT with the 390 FE moved it firmly into muscle car territory. The 1968 Cyclone with the 428 Cobra Jet was one of Ford's fastest production cars. For 1969, Mercury built the Cyclone Spoiler with unique nose treatment and special editions honoring NASCAR drivers Dan Gurney (blue and white) and Cale Yarborough (red and white).
