Mercury Cougar Eliminator

The Mercury Cougar Eliminator was Mercury's answer to the Boss Mustang — a high-performance variant of the Cougar pony car with race-derived engine options, functional hood scoops, spoilers, and bold graphics. Available with the Boss 302, 428 Cobra Jet, and even the 429 Super Cobra Jet, the Eliminator was as fast as anything Ford was selling in 1969–70 and is significantly rarer than its Mustang equivalents.

History

Mercury created the Eliminator package to give the Cougar a direct performance counterpart to the Boss Mustang. The Eliminator added a functional front air dam, rear spoiler, sport mirrors, and a choice of high-output engines including the Boss 302 and 428 Cobra Jet. The 429 Super Cobra Jet option for 1970 produced 375 hp. Production was limited — fewer than 3,000 in both years combined — making it genuinely rare. The Cougar's slightly larger platform gave it better straight-line stability than the Mustang at the cost of some handling agility.
