Mercury Cougar

The Mustang's upscale twin — longer, heavier, and with the GT-E, powered by the 427.

The Cougar shared the Mustang's platform but added three inches to the wheelbase and a more refined, European-influenced character. The GT-E option in 1967–68 offered the 427 (and later the 428 Cobra Jet) — more powerful than anything available in the Mustang at the time. The Eliminator package in 1969–70 added the Boss 302 and 428 CJ, making it the performance Cougar of the era.

History

Ford's Lincoln-Mercury division positioned the Cougar above the Mustang — same F-body bones, 3-inch longer wheelbase, standard bucket seats and console, and a luxury car sensibility. Motor Trend named it Car of the Year for 1967. The GT-E variant with the 427 FE in 1967 was the most powerful Cougar ever sold; the 428 CJ GT-E in 1968 continued that tradition.

The 1969–70 Eliminator package brought the Boss 302 and 428 CJ into Cougar trim, creating a legitimate muscle car with personal luxury overtones. The 1971–73 Cougar shifted to the Torino platform and grew into a full personal luxury car, abandoning its performance credentials entirely. Collectors focus on the 1967–70 cars.

GT-E (1967–68)

427 FE (1967) or 428 CJ (1968). The most powerful factory Cougar, rarer than any Mustang equivalent.

Eliminator (1969–70)

Boss 302 (290 hp), 428 CJ, or 390 options. The performance package with racing stripes.

XR-7

Leather interior, wood-grain dash trim — the luxury Cougar available with all engine options.

GT-E 427 cars are exceptionally rare

Fewer than 400 GT-E cars were built in 1967 with the 427. These are extremely valuable and heavily scrutinized.

Rust mirrors the Mustang

The same rust patterns as the Mustang apply — convertible rear quarters, torque boxes, floor pans. The longer wheelbase means slightly more floor area to inspect.
