Mercedes SL500

The R129 — a completely reengineered SL that introduced an automatic rollover bar and set the template for every SL that followed.

The R129 generation replaced the long-running R107 in 1989 with a thoroughly modern design, most famously introducing an automatic pop-up rollover bar that deployed in milliseconds if the car sensed an impending rollover — a genuine engineering first for a convertible at the time. It remained in production for twelve years with relatively modest changes, a testament to how right Mercedes got the original design.

History

Launched for 1990 (as a 1989 introduction) with a choice of inline-six, V8, and later V12 engines, the R129 was engineered alongside Porsche on certain chassis and suspension elements — a genuine cross-manufacturer collaboration unusual for either company.

A 1996 facelift brought revised headlights, taillights, and interior trim, along with the option of Mercedes' first electronic stability control on the SL — incremental but meaningful updates that extended the platform's competitiveness through the end of its run in 2001.

Notable Versions

SL500 / SL600

The V8 and V12 flagship variants respectively, the most powerful and most collected of the R129 range today.

AMG-tuned variants (SL60/70/73 AMG)

Factory AMG performance versions offering significantly more power, genuinely rare and increasingly collectible.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

The automatic rollover bar mechanism should be tested

A functioning pop-up roll bar is both a safety feature and an originality point — confirm it deploys and resets correctly.

Convertible top hydraulics are a known maintenance item

The complex power-top mechanism can develop hydraulic leaks with age — budget for this on a car with unknown service history.

V12 models carry meaningfully higher running costs

The SL600's V12 is more complex and more expensive to service than the I6/V8 variants — factor this into total ownership cost, not just purchase price.
