Introduced for 1979, the RX-7 used Mazda's Wankel rotary engine to deliver a light, high-revving sports car experience distinct from its piston-powered rivals. Across three generations spanning nearly two decades, it evolved from a simple, affordable sports car into the twin-turbo FD — widely regarded as one of the best-handling Japanese cars of its era.
History
The first-generation RX-7 (SA22C/FB, 1979–1985) was light, simple, and nearly 50/50 weight balanced, built around the compact 12A rotary engine. It won immediate praise for its handling and became a genuine giant-killer on road courses.
The second generation (FC, 1986–1991) grew larger and more refined, adding an optional turbocharged 13B engine and more sophisticated suspension, trading some of the original's rawness for everyday usability.
The third generation (FD, 1993–1995 in the US) introduced a twin-turbo sequential 13B-REW producing up to 255 hp, paired with a low, wide body many consider the high point of rotary sports car design. Complex maintenance requirements and emissions rules ended US sales after 1995, making clean FDs increasingly scarce today.
