Launched for 1990, the Miata (badged MX-5 outside North America) was Mazda's modern take on the classic British roadster — light, simple, and rear-wheel drive, but built with Japanese reliability the old British sports cars never offered. It single-handedly revived the small roadster segment and remains the best-selling two-seat convertible in history.
History
The first-generation NA (1989–1997) debuted with pop-up headlights, a 1.6-liter engine, and a curb weight under 2,200 lbs. Its simplicity and communicative handling were an immediate hit and set the template every generation since has followed.
A 1.8-liter engine arrived partway through the NA's run, adding power without sacrificing the car's light, tossable character.
The second-generation NB (1999–2005) replaced the pop-up headlights with fixed units, sharpened the styling, and offered more power, including a limited-run turbocharged Mazdaspeed MX-5 for 2004. Clean, unmodified examples of both generations are increasingly sought after as collector cars.
