Lotus Elan

Built around Chapman's signature philosophy of "simplify, then add lightness," the Elan used a steel backbone chassis and a fiberglass body to achieve a power-to-weight advantage that let a modest twin-cam four-cylinder engine deliver genuinely thrilling performance. Its steering feel and chassis balance influenced sports car design for decades after, and it remains one of the purest expressions of the lightweight-sports-car idea ever built.
History
Introduced in 1962, the Elan replaced the fragile fiberglass-monocoque Elite with a far more practical steel backbone chassis clothed in a fiberglass body β combining genuine structural integrity with Lotus's obsession with minimizing weight.
The Lotus-Ford twin-cam engine, developed with Harry Mundy and produced in volume by Lotus for both its own cars and outside customers, became one of the most influential small-displacement performance engines of the era.
The Elan Sprint (1971β73) was the final and most powerful factory version, with a "Big Valve" engine tune and distinctive two-tone paint. A 2+2 version was also offered from 1967, trading some of the two-seater's purity for practicality.
