Lincoln Mark III

Personal luxury at its most confident β€” and a technological pioneer.

The Continental Mark III was Lincoln's personal luxury coupe, designed to compete with the Cadillac Eldorado at the top of the American market. Its long hood, short deck proportions, Rolls-Royce-influenced grille, and hidden headlights established the visual language that defined American luxury coupes through the 1970s. The 1970 Mark III was among the first American production cars to offer four-wheel anti-lock brakes as an option.

History

Lee Iacocca championed the Mark III as a response to the Eldorado. The design β€” with its spare-tire hump rear deck, formal roofline, and cross-hatch grille β€” was immediately successful and established the personal luxury coupe formula that GM, Chrysler, and Ford would all follow for the next decade. The 460 V8 produced 365 hp in refined silence.

The Sure-Track anti-lock braking system (rear wheels only) was offered as an option for 1970 β€” one of the earliest production ABS systems on an American car. The Mark III's success led directly to the Mark IV and Mark V, though neither matched the original's design clarity.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

Vinyl roof condition is critical to value

The padded vinyl roof is nearly universal on these cars. Deteriorated vinyl traps moisture and causes rust. Inspect the steel underneath.

460 V8 is durable but thirsty

The 460 is a strong, long-lived engine when maintained. Parts are widely available from the truck and full-size Ford market.

Hidden headlight mechanisms need attention

The vacuum-operated hidden headlight system requires maintenance. Test the system before purchase.
