Jeep CJ-7

The longer-wheelbase CJ that introduced an automatic transmission option and became the platform Wrangler was built to replace.

The CJ-7 arrived in 1976 alongside the shorter CJ-5, offering a longer wheelbase for more interior room and, for the first time in a CJ, a factory automatic transmission option — genuinely broadening who the Jeep could appeal to beyond dedicated off-roaders. It remained in production alongside the CJ-5 until 1986, when both were replaced by the all-new Wrangler.

History

Built on a 10-inch-longer wheelbase than the contemporary CJ-5, the CJ-7 offered noticeably more interior space and, starting in 1976, the option of a Torque Command automatic transmission and a molded plastic hardtop — comfort-oriented options that hadn't previously been available on a short-wheelbase CJ.

The CJ-7 outsold the CJ-5 through most of their shared production run and is generally considered the more usable daily-driver classic Jeep today, which keeps demand — and prices — higher than for an equivalent-condition CJ-5.

Golden Eagle

Appearance package with a distinctive hood eagle decal and gold-accented trim, one of the more recognizable and collected CJ-7 special editions.

Renegade

A sportier trim package with wider tires, flared fenders, and unique graphics, offered across several years of production.

Laredo

An upscale trim with chrome bumpers and a more comfort-focused interior for buyers who wanted a nicer daily-driver Jeep.

What to Look for When Buying

Frame and body rust are extremely common

CJ-7s were driven hard and often left outside; tub, frame, and floor rust is the single biggest value factor — inspect thoroughly before buying.

Confirm originality of special-edition packages

Golden Eagle and Renegade graphics/trim are frequently reproduced or added to base CJ-7s — verify documentation if paying a premium for a special edition.

Parts support is excellent

As one of the best-selling classic Jeeps, mechanical and reproduction body parts are widely available, keeping restoration costs more predictable than rarer classics.
