Jaguar XK120/140/150
The car that put postwar Jaguar on the map as a genuine sports car maker.
Unveiled as a show car in 1948, the XK120's beauty and genuine 120 mph top speed (hence the name) generated such demand that Jaguar rushed it into production. It established the twin-cam XK engine that would power Jaguars for the next three decades.
History
The XK120 (1948β1954) was offered as a roadster, fixed-head coupe, and drophead coupe, powered by the new 3.4-liter twin-cam XK engine. Early cars used aluminum body panels before Jaguar switched to steel for volume production.
The XK140 (1954β1957) added rack-and-pinion steering, more interior and luggage space, and an optional overdrive transmission β real usability improvements over the 120.
The XK150 (1957β1961) widened the body, added disc brakes as standard, and culminated in the 3.8-liter "S" variant producing 265 hp β the fastest and most capable XK of all.

What to Look for When Buying
Key inspection points from experienced collectors.
Inspect steel body panels and structure for rust
Steel-bodied cars (post-alloy production) rust extensively β check sills, floors, and door bottoms carefully.
Verify the engine block matches chassis records
Jaguar Heritage can confirm original specification against chassis number β essential for value on any XK.
Check wire wheel spline condition if equipped
Worn splines are a safety issue as well as a costly repair.
Watch for timing chain tensioner wear
A known XK engine wear point β listen for chain noise on cold start.
Panel gaps reveal restoration quality
Inconsistent gaps or poor paint match usually indicate a lower-quality prior restoration.
