Ford Thunderbolt

Ford's factory drag car β€” a Fairlane with a 427 crammed in by hand.

The Ford Thunderbolt was a factory drag racing weapon built in 1964 by Dearborn Steel Tubing under contract from Ford. Starting with a Fairlane two-door sedan, builders removed the standard engine bay structure and hand-fitted Ford's 427 High Riser V8 β€” an engine too large to fit without significant modifications. Only 100 were built, all in white or Rangoon Red, and they dominated NHRA Super/Stock drag racing in 1964.

History

Ford contracted Dearborn Steel Tubing to build the Thunderbolts using a specific formula: Fairlane 500 two-door body, 427 High Riser or Low Riser V8, fiberglass front fenders and hood (to save weight), Plexiglas side windows, and a stripped interior. The cars were delivered to dealers who then sold them to approved drag racers. On the strip, they ran the quarter mile in the 11-second range β€” devastating for a factory car. Only two colors were offered: Vintage Burgundy (a special red) and white.

Notable Versions

High Riser 427

The top engine option β€” high-rise intake manifold for maximum top-end power.

Low Riser 427

Slightly lower intake for better hood clearance; comparable power output.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

Only 100 were built β€” authentication is paramount

The Thunderbolt registry and Ford production records are essential. With values this high, thorough documentation is non-negotiable.

Many parts were modified at the factory

Original fiberglass hoods and fenders, Plexiglas windows, and stripped interiors must be verified as original, not later modifications.

These are race cars, not street cars

Original Thunderbolts were not equipped for comfortable street use. Most survivors show race history and significant wear.
