America's first modern car-truck hybrid — and with a 428 Cobra Jet, one of the fastest.
The Ranchero predated the El Camino by two years and created the American coupe utility segment. Its three distinct eras — full-size (1957–59), Falcon-based (1960–66), and Torino-based (1968–79) — mirror Ford's platform evolution. The Torino-based versions with the 428 Cobra Jet and 429 Super Cobra Jet are among the most undervalued performance vehicles of the era.
History
Ford launched the Ranchero in 1957 as a stylish alternative to conventional pickups — a car you could drive to the country club and still haul a load. The 1957–59 full-size cars are handsome but heavy. The 1960–66 Falcon-based Ranchero was lighter and more car-like. The 1968 redesign onto the Torino chassis transformed it — now the Ranchero could be ordered with the same 428 Cobra Jet and 429 SCJ available in the muscle car Torino.
The performance Ranchero has always been the ultimate Q-ship — nobody expected a car-truck to run 13s. The GT and Squire models added appearance trims. By the mid-1970s, emissions regulations had neutered the performance options and the Ranchero faded into a comfortable hauler before ending production in 1979.

Bed and cab junction is a rust trap
The transition between cargo bed and passenger cab collects water and debris. Inspect this area carefully on any candidate.
Torino-era parts interchange widely
The 1968–71 Ranchero shares mechanical components with Torino and Fairlane. Parts are plentiful and affordable.
CJ and SCJ Rancheros are extremely undervalued
Performance Rancheros trade at a significant discount to equivalent Torinos despite identical mechanicals. A strong value play.
