Ford Model A

The car that proved Ford could follow the Model T — simple, durable, and still one of the most accessible entry points into pre-war collecting.

Introduced in December 1927 to replace the aging Model T after nearly two decades of production, the Model A was a completely new design with conventional three-pedal controls (the Model T used unusual pedal-operated planetary gears), giving it broad appeal to drivers already used to other makes. Over 4.8 million were built in just over four years, making surviving examples relatively plentiful and parts support excellent even a century later.

History

Ford halted all production for roughly six months in 1927 to retool for the Model A, an enormous undertaking for the time. The result was a genuinely modern car for its era: a standard sliding-gear transmission, four-wheel mechanical brakes, and a more powerful engine than the outgoing Model T.

The Model A was offered in an unusually wide range of body styles for the period — roadster, phaeton, coupe, sedan, Tudor, Fordor, pickup, and more — many of which are represented in today's classic-car and hot-rod communities, since the Model A remains one of the most popular platforms for period-style hot rods and street rods.

Mechanical brakes require different driving habits and maintenance

Four-wheel mechanical brakes are less forgiving than later hydraulic systems — make sure they're correctly adjusted before a test drive, and factor this into how you plan to use the car.
