Ford Maverick Grabber

Ford's budget pony car — a 302 V8 in a compact package at Pinto money.

The Ford Maverick Grabber was the performance variant of Ford's economy compact, offering a 302 V8 with sporty graphics and a handling package at a price point below any other muscle car. While it was never a true performance machine by the standards of the era, the Grabber offered genuine V8 fun in an affordable package — and its low original price means it remains accessible to collectors today.

History

Ford introduced the Maverick in 1970 as a no-frills economy car priced at $1,995. The Grabber package immediately offered a sportier appearance with hood graphics, stripes, and bright colors. A 200 cubic inch straight-six was standard, but the optional 302 V8 transformed the lightweight Maverick into a capable performer. The Sprint option for 1972–73 added a 302 with dual exhausts, bucket seats, and sport wheel covers, representing the performance peak of the Maverick line.

What to Look for When Buying

Key inspection points from experienced collectors.

Rust is the primary concern

Rockers, lower quarters, and floor pans rust heavily on Mavericks. Budget for significant metal work on any project.

302 V8 is easy to work on

The 302 Windsor engine has outstanding aftermarket support. Parts and expertise are widely available and affordable.

Values are still accessible

Grabber Mavericks are among the most affordable V8 muscle-era cars on the market. Don't overpay — supply is reasonable.
