The Galaxie was Ford's full-size performance flagship, and the 427-powered 1963–64 cars dominated NASCAR's superspeedways in a way no other manufacturer could match. The street-legal 427 dual-quad (R-code) cars are among the most brutal factory performance cars ever sold, capable of running the quarter mile in the mid-13s from the showroom floor.
History
Ford positioned the Galaxie at the top of its full-size lineup and used it as the primary NASCAR weapon from 1960 through 1965. The 1963 'Starlift' fastback body and the 1964 fastback were developed specifically for aerodynamic advantage at Daytona and Talladega. On the street, the 427 in 'High Riser' or 'Low Riser' form — named for their intake manifold height — offered a level of performance that few factory cars of any era could match.
The 1966 Galaxie 500 7-Litre introduced the 428 as the street performance engine, offering torque-oriented performance in a more refined package. By the late 1960s, the muscle car action had shifted to mid-size cars, and the Galaxie evolved into a comfort-focused full-sizer. The early 427 cars remain the collector focus.

Full-size rust is extensive
Large floor pans, trunk area, and lower quarters give rust plenty of surface area. Inspect everything before committing.
R-code 427 authentication is critical
The partial VIN block stamp and door data plate must confirm the R-code. 427 engine swaps are common; few genuine R-codes remain.
Lightweight cars are exceptionally rare
Factory drag lightweights with fiberglass and aluminum are among the rarest Fords ever built. Provenance documentation is essential.
Fastback bodies are most desirable
The 1963 "Starlift" and 1964–65 fastback rooflines are more collectible than the formal hardtops.
