Ford Falcon
The compact that launched the Mustang — and the Sprint V8 made it more than a grocery getter.
The Falcon was Ford's economy compact, but its Sprint package with a V8 offered surprising performance in a lightweight package. More significantly, the Falcon's platform, wheelbase, and basic architecture were the direct foundation for the 1964½ Mustang. Without the Falcon, the pony car era may never have happened. The 1963–65 Sprint convertible is the most collectible Falcon.
History
Ford launched the Falcon in 1960 as a response to the Rambler and the incoming threat of VW imports — a simple, economical compact without fins or excess chrome. It sold 435,676 units in its first year, the best debut for any new nameplate in American history to that point. The 1963 Sprint added the 260 V8 and bucket seats, turning the economy car into a genuine driver's car.
When the Mustang launched in 1964, it cannibalized Falcon sales. The Falcon continued through 1970 on an updated platform, offering mild performance with the 289 and 302 V8. The rare Futura Sports Coupe is the most stylish variant. Australia's Ford division built Falcon-derived performance cars well into the 2000s, but the American Falcon ends as a modest compact with an outsized historical legacy.

Rust is the primary concern
Rockers, floor pans, and lower quarters rust through. The compact body means fewer hiding places but also less metal overall.
Parts are surprisingly plentiful
The Falcon shares significant components with the early Mustang. This improves parts availability considerably.
Six-cylinder cars are practical restomod bases
A clean inline-six Falcon accepts any small-block Ford V8 easily. An inexpensive canvas for a performance build.
