Ford Fairlane
Ford's mid-size sleeper β the 427 Fairlane is one of the rarest muscle cars ever built.
The Fairlane was Ford's intermediate-sized entry and, with the 427 V8 in 1966, produced one of the rarest factory muscle cars in history. Only about 70 cars received the 427 in 1966. The 428 Cobra Jet became the standard-issue Fairlane performance engine from 1968, offering better streetability and strong performance at a fraction of the 427's scarcity premium.
History
The Fairlane debuted in 1962 as a compact-to-intermediate sized car. Performance credibility arrived in 1966 when Ford shoehorned the 427 into a body never designed for it β engineers had to notch the frame rails to fit the big-block. Fewer than 100 of these cars were sold; they exist today as museum-quality artifacts. The GT and GTA versions with the 390 FE V8 offered more accessible performance.
The 1968 redesign and the arrival of the 428 Cobra Jet transformed the Fairlane into a mainstream muscle car. The Torino nameplate β a senior Fairlane variant β would eventually replace the Fairlane name entirely after 1970. The 428 CJ cars are among the most undervalued Fords of the era, offering Mustang-level performance at a significant discount.
Notable Versions

The rarest factory Fairlane. Approximately 70 built with 425 hp. Frame notching required. Museum pieces.

390 FE V8 in a stylish fastback. The original GT Fairlane is the most attainable performance variant.
428 Cobra Jet (1968β69)
335 hp (underrated) in a lighter body than the Torino. Excellent performance-per-dollar.
What to Look for When Buying
Key inspection points from experienced collectors.
427 Fairlanes require absolute verification
The rarity and value of genuine 427 cars means extremely thorough documentation β Marti Report, partial VIN stamp, frame inspection for notching.
Rust is common at the lower quarters
The lower rear quarters and trunk floor rust heavily. Plan for bodywork on any project car.
428 CJ cars are exceptional value
A 428 CJ Fairlane delivers near-identical performance to a 428 Mustang at 30β40% lower cost. The market has not caught up.
