Dodge Viper
American excess distilled into 8 liters and no excuses.
The Viper was conceived by Bob Lutz and Carroll Shelby as a spiritual successor to the Cobra — brutal, analog, and unapologetically extreme. Its 8.0-liter V10 produced 400 hp at launch and grew to 645 hp by the final generation. The ACR (American Club Racer) variants set production car lap records at tracks worldwide. No car captures the raw American performance ethos more directly.
History
Lutz and Shelby sketched the original Viper concept in 1988; the 1992 production car retained nearly all of that purity. The 8.0L V10 was derived from a Lamborghini truck engine (Chrysler owned Lamborghini at the time) and produced 400 hp through side-exit pipes with no catalytic converters, no stability control, and no ABS — just a driver, a V10, and consequences. The GTS coupe joined in 1996 with a more practical body.
Chrysler's bankruptcy nearly killed the Viper before the SRT brand revived it for 2013 in Gen 5 form with 640 hp standard and 645 hp in the ACR. The ACR set production car lap records at Laguna Seca, Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, and the Nürburgring. Production ended in 2017 when FCA couldn't justify the development cost for a third update cycle. The first-gen roadsters (1992–95) and the ACR variants are most sought by collectors.

GTS (1996–2002)
The coupe variant with a more refined interior. The GTS-R racing version won the GT class at Le Mans.
ACR (1999–2002, 2008–10, 2015–17)
American Club Racer — track-focused suspension, aero, and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires. Production car lap record holders.
SRT10 (2003–10)
500 hp third generation with convertible and coupe. More refined without losing the visceral character.
Final Edition (2017)

What to Look for When Buying
Key inspection points from experienced collectors.
Side exhaust burns are a right-of-passage caution
Gen 1 side pipes reach extreme temperatures. Previous owners often have leg burns; the car has too. Inspect the body beside the pipes.
Gen 1 ABS and traction control absence demands respect
The 1992–95 Viper has no electronic aids. A skilled driver is required; this is not a car for inattentive moments.
Coolant system maintenance is critical
Overheating is a known issue on high-mileage examples. A coolant flush history and pressure test are worthwhile before any purchase.
ACR documentation commands a premium
Genuine ACR packages were dealer-installed or factory-ordered; verify through VIN documentation.
