Dodge Super Bee
Dodge's budget muscle bomb — same performance as the Charger at a lower sticker price.
The Super Bee was Dodge's stripped-performance answer to Plymouth's Road Runner — maximum engine, minimum frills, low insurance price. The 383 Magnum was standard (not an option), the 440 Six-Pack added three carburetors and 390 hp, and the 426 HEMI transformed it into a quarter-mile weapon. The bumblebee stripe around the rear and the cartoon Super Bee logo made it unmistakable.
History
Plymouth's Road Runner had proven buyers wanted brutal performance in a simple package, and Dodge followed with the Super Bee in 1968. Built on the Coronet platform, it came with the 383 Magnum as standard equipment — you bought performance, not a performance option. The 440 Six-Pack (three Holley 2-barrel carbs) arrived for 1969, offering 390 hp at a significant savings over the HEMI.
For 1971, the Super Bee moved to the larger Charger body as the Coronet was phased out. The 1971 Super Bee Charger is actually a desirable car — Charger styling with Super Bee performance — but it ended the nameplate's run after just four years. The 1969–70 Coronet-based cars are the most collectible, particularly the 440 Six-Pack and HEMI examples.
