The Dart was Dodge's compact, and the 1968–76 third generation is beloved by performance enthusiasts for its light weight, strong aftermarket support, and compatibility with the full Mopar engine lineup. The Dart Sport and Swinger 340 represent excellent performance value — fast, affordable, and increasingly collectible.
History
The Dart began as a full-size car in 1960–61 before being repositioned as Dodge's compact in 1963. The third generation (1967–76) is the most collectible, offering the 340 and 383 V8 in a car weighing under 3,000 lbs. The 1968–69 GTS models with the 383 big-block are particularly rare — Chrysler force-fit the large engine into the small bay as a performance special. The Demon 340 (1971–72) brought a sportback body and strong drag strip credentials.

The Slant Six is nearly indestructible
Base Slant Six Darts are reliable daily drivers available cheaply. They accept V8 conversions easily.
Rocker panels and A-pillars rust
The bottom of the A-pillars and rocker panels are common rust areas. Probe before committing.
383 engine bay clearances are tight
Big-block Darts have minimal clearance around the engine. Verify all plumbing, wiring, and cooling system components are correct.
Excellent parts availability
The 340 engine has outstanding aftermarket support. Restoration is practical and affordable compared to exotic muscle cars.
