The Monte Carlo debuted in 1970 as Chevrolet's personal luxury coupe, but the SS package with the 454 V8 transformed it into a genuine muscle car in a sophisticated package. The LS5 and LS6 options put serious horsepower beneath an elegant hood, and the second-generation colonnade cars (1973–77) became NASCAR weapons that dominated the superspeedways.
History
Chevrolet designed the Monte Carlo to compete directly with the Pontiac Grand Prix — a personal luxury coupe with performance credentials. The 1970 debut offered the SS package with the 454 in LS5 (360 hp) or LS6 (454 hp) form, the latter being the same engine that powered the legendary 1970 Chevelle SS. Sales of 130,657 in its first year confirmed the formula worked.
The second generation (1973–77) grew longer and heavier under federal bumper mandates, but Chevrolet's racing division saw potential in the new body's aerodynamic properties. The aero-nosed Monte Carlo Laguna S-3 became a dominant force in NASCAR, with drivers like Cale Yarborough winning championships in the car. Street versions with the 454 offered up to 245 net hp — impressive for the emissions era.

Second-gen cars are undervalued
