The Impala was Chevrolet's top-of-the-line full-size car and one of the most culturally significant American automobiles. The 1958–1964 models with their dramatic styling, the SS409 performance package, and the full-size convertibles are among the most sought-after collector cars from the era.
History
Introduced as a top-trim option in 1958 and given its own series in 1959, the Impala immediately became a status symbol. The 1959's dramatic bat-wing rear fins represent the high-water mark of American styling excess. The clean-lined 1961–64 Impalas — particularly the 'bubbletop' hardtop — are today's most collected examples. The SS (Super Sport) package arrived in 1961, and when the 409 V8 was added, The Beach Boys immortalized the combination.
By 1965, the full-size Impala was the best-selling car in America, a position it held for years. The 1965–70 models are more affordable and widely available. The 1971–76 cars grew larger and heavier under federal bumper mandates and have less collector appeal, though they remain comfortable drivers.
