Chevrolet Chevy II
A compact body, a 327 V8, and nothing else — factory sleeper before anyone called it that.
The 1966–67 Chevy II SS with the 327 V8 is one of the great factory sleepers of the muscle car era. Chevrolet stuffed its high-performance small-block into the compact Chevy II body with minimal fanfare, creating a lightweight, quick car that surprised a lot of bigger-engined competition at traffic lights and drag strips. The L79 327 option — 350 hp — is the one to find.
History
Chevrolet had offered the Chevy II since 1962 as an economy compact. The addition of V8 power in 1964 transformed it. By 1966, the SS package with the 327 in L30 (275 hp) or L79 (350 hp) form made it a legitimate performance machine. The L79 327 was the same engine used in the Corvette and Chevelle SS — in the lighter Chevy II, it produced blistering performance for the money. Only 1966–67 are the true high-performance years; the third-generation Nova (1968–74) replaced this body.
